A Multivitamin is any preparation containing more than a single vitamin. In common usage, “Multivitamin” refers to tablets that contain various vitamins usually along with dietary minerals and, occasionally, herbal extracts.
Multi-Vitamins are naturally occurring substances necessary for many processes in the body. Vitamins are found in the foods we eat.
Multivitamins are combinations of vitamins in tablets, capsules, liquids, and injections. Multivitamins are used to treat vitamin shortages in the body that may occur because of illness, pregnancy, poor nutrition, decreased absorption of foods through the stomach, and many other circumstances.
Some multivitamins may affect other medical conditions or treatments. Do not start taking a multivitamin without first talking to your doctor if you have any health problems or conditions, or if you take other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Multivitamins are generally considered to be safe for use during pregnancy and breast-feeding. However, large doses of some vitamins can be harmful.
Multivitamin is intended to provide a proper dietary balance by supplementing the diet with additional vitamins and minerals.
Multivitamin is important because there’s nothing like a sound, low-fat diet full of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to supply the vitamins and minerals we need to stay healthy.
Unfortunately, we don’t always eat well. Add to that the possible harmful effects of stress, aging, lack of exercise, pollution, and illness, and supplements become even more important. That’s why so many experts now recommend that everyone take a daily Multivitamin.
1. Multivitamins Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer
Various factors are known to affect the risk of certain types of cancer. Among the risks for colon cancer include things such as folate intake, family history, and alcohol consumption. For people who have multiple risk factors, the risk of contracting colon cancer is much greater. This study followed over 88,000 women with a family history of colon cancer. This research study found that for women with a family history, high levels of methionine were linked to a reduction in risk. An increase in alcohol intake will increase the risk of colon cancer in women with a family history. Those women who used a daily multivitamin also had a decrease in risk. This suggests that women with a family history of colon cancer may reduce their risk of cancer by increasing methionine, avoiding heavy consumption of alcohol, and by using a daily multivitamin which contains folic acid.

2. Reduced risks of Heart Diseases
This large scale study examined over a million people in the U.S. and compared their mortality rates after segregating them into groups based on their multivitamin and supplement use. Those participants that had just used a multivitamin alone, without Vitamins A, C, or E, had minimal reductions in cancer and heart disease rates. However, those participants who had multivitamin use with vitamins A, C, and E had significantly reduced risk of heart disease related deaths (mortality).

3. Maintenance of optimal nutrient status
This study gave older adults either a placebo or a multivitamin daily in order to determine the effect of the multivitamin on the nutritional status in the adult. This study lasted for a total of 8 weeks, after which the body’s level of nutrients was examined. After completion of the study, those participants who had been taking the multivitamin had much higher levels of many of the essential nutrients. This was true even for adults who indicated they were already eating folic fortified food. This suggests that especially in older adults, even with an already supplemented diet, the use of a daily multivitamin can help them to obtain optimal nutrient status.

4. Protects against infections and illness
This study looked at the benefits from taking a multivitamin by adults in the U.S. A total of 130 participants were given either a multivitamin or a placebo to take daily for a year. During the year, those participants who were taking the placebo reported a higher rate of illness, especially among participants who had diabetes. Those participants, both with and without diabetes, reported less sickness over the year. Those taking the multivitamin also had less absenteeism related to illness over the year. This suggests that the use of a daily multivitamin does protect against some illness, and when illness occurs, its intensity may not be as severe as it would have been otherwise. This is also true for people who have diabetes

5. Reduces many symptoms related to stress
This study looked specifically at the effect that a multivitamin has on a febrile illness related birth defect, which can also lead to some types of cancer. Several cases of birth defects in babies were studied and categorized based on the use of a multivitamin or not and then the presence of febrile illness or not. Those cases with both febrile illness and no multivitamin use had the highest risk of these birth defects. The combined multivitamin use and febrile illness had less risk of birth defects. Thus, the use of a multivitamin is associated with a decreased risk of birth defects, especially when febrile illness is present.

6. Promotes Psychological Well Being
This research study examined the effect of an oral multivitamin supplement on psychological wellbeing and functioning. Male participants who were free of chronic medical problems were given either a multivitamin or a placebo during the course of 28 days. Participants were not aware of which supplement they were taking, whether it was the placebo or the multivitamin. At the conclusion of the study, those participants who had taken the multivitamin had reported a significant reduction in anxiety and stress levels. They also reported improved concentration and less fatigue. Those patients who were taking the placebo continued to report body pains, such as nausea and headaches, associated with anxiety more often than those taking the multivitamin.

7. Pregnancy and Morning Sickness
A common side effect of pregnancy is the “morning sickness” consisting of nausea and vomiting. There are several possible reasons for this effect, and there are also many suspected cures. This study examined the role of Vitamin B6 in the prevalence and severity of the nausea and vomiting associated with early pregnancy. Participants were interviewed as to their experiences with nausea and vomiting and their vitamin supplementation usage. The results suggested that the use of a multivitamin helped to reduce the number of vomiting episodes during morning sickness, and also helped to reduce weight loss associated with vomiting.
